"It's a work of Art, that I happen to live in ", says Jeff Muhs of the home and studio he designed and built for he and his wife in Southamptons' Shinnecock Hills. Jeff purchased the 1960's ranch house on a secluded lot in 2004 and quickly began a renovation and large studio addition. Acting as an architect, designer, builder and craftsman, He set about creating his personal vision. "As a sculptor I found it familiar designing architectural spaces." Born and raised in the Hamptons, (Southampton Hospital 1966) " I am a product of my environment. As an artist, I have the legacy of some of the most influential artists of the twentieth century who have lived and worked here. As a designer I have developed my tastes and aesthetic being surrounded by the most beautiful homes, created and appointed by the most talented people."
"Being a perfectionist with strong personal style there is now way I could have let other people be responsible for the environment in which I live and work in. Not to mention and miss out on all the fun. The sense of fulfillment I get creating it all myself is priceless."
"As you look around there is almost nothing down to the lighting, furniture, and décor, that I am not personally responsible for." When designing and fabricating the kitchen, each piece of wood was hand picked and positioned for its' grain patterning.
Jeff has made extensive use of concrete in his home, "It's a great material, limited only by your imagination and strength."
"I spend almost all of my time here. For that reason I have a lot of time to contemplate the interiors, always with a predominant consideration for showcasing art- my own and more recently the work of my contemporaries that my wife Beth and I have been acquiring. Something may be bothering me about the relation of art and objects in a room or the room itself may not have found it's particular voice. Over time and with endless thought things get worked out. The art especially changes a lot. For someone who visits twice over the span of a couple of months the interior may look completely different. New art and new dialogues." |
